A Labor Day Message
I love the statue Self Made Man by Bobbie Carlyle. It’s a man with a hammer in one hand and a chisel in the other, and he is carving himself out of a big block of stone.
It’s a great metaphor for life.
The hammer is the work that you choose to do. The chisel is the attitude with what you do that work.
I’ve known housekeepers who are creating beautiful self-portraits with the joy they bring to their work. And I’ve known executives who create bobblehead statues by sucking the joy out of the work, and the people around them.
Labor Day is for fun and play and picnics. It’s also a great time to look at the statue you’ve been creating through your work and your attitude, and to reflect upon whether you need better tools.
In the memorable phrase of Kahlil Gibran, is your work love made visible?
