I wrote these words 25 years ago, but they have never been more relevant than they are today.
Black Lives Matter and the larger movement for racial equality and social justice have highlighted the magnitude of the problems in our society – and the intensity of resistance to effectively removing inequality and assuring justice.

Historians of a future generation will, can there be any doubt, point to the year 2020 as a turning point in our culture. Whether the story is one of cultural renaissance or a new dark age is in our hands, and will largely be determined by whether we build walls of fear or open up bridges of courage.
