How DAISY has Influenced Global Healthcare Culture

The Values Coach Growth-Impact Model

I’m leading a team of graduate students from University of Iowa College of Public Health on a study of the influence of The DAISY Foundation (DAISY) on healthcare culture. We’re using the Growth-Impact Model pictured above. The white paper has just been completed and is available for download at this link.

This model goes beyond the usual growth and revenue metrics to assess how successful an organization really is. The white paper is specifically about DAISY but the lessons apply to any organization, whether for-profit or not-for-profit, healthcare or other industry.

As described in the white paper, in just the past 23 years, DAISY has achieved growth and impact that would be the envy of any Silicon Valley startup. DAISY partners with more than 5,800 healthcare organizations in 37 different nations. Over 2.5 million nurses have been nominated for DAISY Awards. DAISY Awardees almost universally consider this to be one of the highlights of their career and the Healer’s Touch sculpture will have an honored place in their homes.

As reflected in a >90% retention rate among partnering organizations, DAISY universally has a positive impact on workplace culture. During the pandemic and post-pandemic staffing challenges, DAISY Award celebrations have helped sustain morale and for nominated nurses and nurse leaders served as a wonderful reminder of why they became nurses in the first place.

In assessing the growth and impact of The DAISY Foundation, the team looked at 14 Key Business Practices (KBP), each of which are described in the white paper, including examples from industries other than healthcare. Again, these lessons apply to every organization in every industry, not just healthcare.
