I am Worried about your Culture – Questions You Should be Asking Now

Several years ago, we created a Culture IQ app. It includes 8 questions to assess how your organization rates on the 8 essential characteristics of a Culture of Ownership that are described in my book The Florence Prescription.

Completing the survey you will get an immediate score between 8 (worst possible) and 24 (best possible) and a general assessment of what that number implies about your culture. 

The app was designed to be absolutely anonymous. We do not know anything about people who complete the survey – not their job title, the industry they work in, or anything else. We do not collect an email address so we cannot follow up.

We do not promote the survey. It is strictly word-of-mouth, and responses tend to come in batches.

Over the years we’ve had many thousands of people complete the Culture IQ quiz. I keep a rough running average, which generally fluctuate between a total of 16 and 17 points, but with great variation. For example, we have low numbers (between 8 and 12) offset by high numbers (between 20 and 24) contributing to a midpoint average.

Over the past several months, I’ve seen an uptick in the number of responses. And the average is significantly lower than what I’m used to seeing – now running between 12 and 14.

While this is not a statistically significant finding, I hope it will challenge you to objectively assess the impact of COVID-19 and the subsequent economic challenges on your people and on your culture.

Our VCI-17 Culture Assessment Survey is a validated instrument. We have added several questions asking about the impact of COVID-19 on culture. Here are two responses from managers at the same health system where the survey was very recently administered:

Very negative. The crisis has made people scared and negative personalities have really come to the surface.

Very positive. I think that all areas have come together very well for the health and wellness of our patients and staff.

We are seeing this dichotomy in every organization. And it highlights the challenge that we all need to meet: How do we heal the harm that has been caused to our cultures by anxiety, exhaustion, moral distress, and in many cases job loss while at the same time retaining the positive spirit of camaraderie, teamwork, creative thinking and innovation and not letting culture slip back to business as usual once the crisis passes?

And how do we take what we have learned and use it to help prepare us to better cope with the next crisis that will inevitably come sooner rather than later?
