Anyone who has looked up over the past year has seen something only seen once in the previous 70 years or so: a sky completely devoid of airplane contrails. Other than a few days after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, when all flights were grounded, except in remote areas a sky like that has not been seen since the 1950s.
While we all hope and pray that vaccines are the light at the end of the covid tunnel, one of the best indicators that life is returning to some semblance of the pre-covid normal will be a blue sky laced with white contrails. The Contrail Index (don’t try to find that in an economics textbook because I made it up) might well be the best indicator that businesses are booming and people are vacationing.
So for now, look up and appreciate a sight that might not be seen for generations to come. But also do your part to increase the Contrail Index, and bring us closer to the light at the end of the tunnel, by practicing the CDC guidelines of physical distancing, hand washing, and protecting yourself and others by wearing a mask.
