One of the key themes expressed by more than one hundred contributing authors to the Stay Strong For Us Project is this: the key difference between success and failure is simply refusing to quit when you hit a brick wall.
We all hope and pray that vaccines will be the “light at the end of the tunnel” on the coronavirus pandemic. But the impact of physical and emotional stress, including for many people discouragement and hopelessness, will continue on – perhaps for years.
If you read biographies of successful people and motivational books on how to achieve success, you will see over and over the theme that achieving any goal requires perseverance (Core Action Value #5 in our course on The Twelve Core Action Values). As entrepreneur and venture capitalist Ben Horowitz put it in his book The Hard Thing About Hard Things:
Whenever I meet a successful CEO, I ask them how they did it. Mediocre CEOs point to their brilliant strategic moves or their intuitive business sense for a variety of other self-congratulatory explanations. The great CEOs tend to be remarkably consistent in their answers. They all say: ‘I didn’t quit.’
I didn’t quit.
That is the 3-word success formula. It doesn’t mean to not stop if something isn’t working. It means don’t give up. Don’t give up on your dreams. Don’t give up on yourself.
The danger of quitting is usually greater the nearer one comes to the finish line. People don’t drop out of a marathon after the first mile, they drop out after hitting the wall when the finish line is almost in sight. As we approach “the light at the end of the tunnel,” we must increase our vigilance.
As a result of the pandemic and economic recession, millions of people have, one way or another, hit a brick wall. They are at risk of giving up. That is why I created Stay Strong For Us. You need to Stay Strong for us so that you can stay strong for yourself, for those you love, and for those you care for.
